Alfred Effiong Commits International Future To Malta Ahead Of Nigeria

Alfred Effiong

Alfred Effiong has committed his international future to Malta, though he was born and brought up in Nigeria.
The Qormi hero became eligible to represent the Island Nation on Thursday last week, after he was granted citizenship by marriage.

Effiong, who grew up in Lagos, did not bat an eyelid when quizzed on the national team he would love to represent, saying he has pledged his allegiance to Malta.

''I got the nationality of Malta on the 26th of February, I got married to a Maltese lady in 2010,'' Alfred Effiong told SL10.ng.

''My dream of playing for the national team of Nigeria has been long gone because they tend to look for players recommended to the coaches by their agents.

''If the opportunity to play for Malta arises, I will gladly accept it because Malta is my home now.''

Getting Alfred Effiong to change his decision was like flogging a dead horse, as he reiterated that his mind was made up on wearing the red jersey of Malta.

''Yes I have committed my international future to Malta if I get the opportunity, but till now I haven't been approached,'' the 30 - year -
old added.

The likes of Chucks Nwoko, Udochukwu Nwoko, Orosco Anonam, Ifeanyi Okonkwo and Chris Okoh represented Malta at senior level, and Effiong might follow in their footsteps.
